Before you Read on, note Spoilers for Louder vs Fonger Below.
I had a chance to ask Fonger some questions, after his impressive games vs. Louder.
Answers were reworded to correct punctuation and grammar errors.
Sonde:How long have you been playing Starcraft?
Fonger:I picked it up shortly after watching the WCG where androide took 2nd place to fOrU in 2005. So I have been playing almost exactly 3 years.
Sonde:Why did you originally choose terran?
Fonger:Partly I guess because of watching androide, and partly supply depots and barracks. They look so cool and you can do so much with
them.
Sonde:When you saw you were matched up against Louder what were you thinking?
Fonger:I thought I got pretty unlucky to go up against a player like louder in the first round, and I knew he would be out for revenge
after the win i managed to scrape off him in yankee league ^^
Sonde:What did you do to prepare for your opponent?
Fonger: I have been relatively inactive lately, so I didn't really think a mass-gaming approach would work since I would have a hell of a
lot of work to do to catch up with someone like Louder that is so mechanically sound. Instead I talked with Kwark, the english
protoss player who I hate intensely for coming up with the most ridiculous strategies and pulling them off time and time again with
about 80apm. I asked for ideas on strats etc; basically was looking for some way to win with decisions rather than trying to go toe-to-
toe in a macro game. If you're reading this kwark, thanks for the advice but i still hate you.
Sonde:Being one of your first Live events, where you nervous going up against Louder?
Fonger:It's hard to say really. I really find I generally play my best against better players, so that gave me confidence that I would be
showing my best game regardless of the outcome. With that in mind I was pretty relaxed about it,although everything changes of
course when you're at a critical part of the game, and feel like you could just win if you do this right.
Sonde:Knowing Louder's Reaver Control were you expecting them?
Fonger:Initially I was expecting a DT opening, since our game in yankee league. After talking with Kwark about the maps etc, I started to
figure it would be more likely he would go for pretty fast expansions in both games. In the end I expected anything but reavers
especially since he had pretty bad luck with them in our yankee league game.
Sonde:In Game 2 you went for the Proxy Rax, what was your thought and Reasoning behind it?
Fonger:12/13 nexus seems to be a pretty popular opening on Colosseum, so I went with a build that I felt would give me the best chance to
end the game then and there. As it turns out, he went gateway first, but his building placement along with a few other things let me
do some significant damage.
Sonde:I mean seriously, you did not just beat any player, you beat Louder who finished 3rd in the WCG U.S. Do you feel you might test your
luck in trying to qualify for WCG?
Fonger:I loved watching Louder tear it up all the way to the semi Finals in WCG USA, because he's caught a lot of flak from other players
for incidents relating to the qualifiers. Unfortunately, New Zealand has never held a qualifier for WCG Brood War.
Sonde:After defeating if not the biggest threat in GG NO RE, how do you feel your chances are in winning GG NO RE?
Fonger:Louder did not underestimate me, but i think he did underestimate the gigantic luck train that was following me.If i can keep
riding that I might have a chance regardless. Now that I'm past the first round I'll definitely be putting in my best effort to brush
up on both mechanical and strategic play.
Thank you!
